The actual problems facing housing are much more complicated. Someone sent me this @mnolangray.bsky.social post earlier and I thought it laid things out nicely: high-cost areas are a minority. Meanwhile other areas have issues with either poverty or access. mnolangray.substack.com/p/the-united...

The reason I feel very strongly about this is because my professional expertise is in housing SEGREGATION and neighborhood change, and it’s infuriating to see white professionals screech about a housing crisis while implicitly ignoring 50% of urban America (you’ll never guess who lives there).

Central cities, supposedly much harder to afford than the surrounding suburbs, typically have lower median incomes and much higher poverty rates than many of those suburbs. How does that work? Well, these debates are actually about a subset of neighborhoods.

What happens is that very online professionals on Bluesky are very disproportionately located in those regions, and in fact get mad at you if you suggest they should live anywhere else, and so they treat those unusual conditions as the national norm. They simply aren’t the norm.

YES, Los Angeles is a high-cost region, and generally, CA has some of the most messed-up housing markets on the planet Earth. HOWEVER, the profound crisis conditions - 4k for a studio apartment, etc. - are confined to small geographies, EVEN IN CALIFORNIA. That is not a representative experience.
