There are many among the MAGA extremists who understand this precisely. That is exactly why they are indulging in fascistic fever dreams of Trump declaring “a national security emergency,” of putting an end to the threat of liberal democracy by imposing “martial law.”

That is why the attempted autocoup in 2020 failed: Trump simply couldn’t convince enough people to go along. I believe that will yet again be the most likely outcome. Especially since this will all happen out in the open, under the intense scrutiny of a highly alert public.

I believe the key is to consider the necessary scale of these efforts and remember how many people would have to go along with a scheme that would expose everyone involved to great personal risk but is unlikely to succeed in the face of hardening public resistance.

Every Iowa county auditor’s office is open today for early in person voting. 8 to 5 in Polk County, check hours for your county. I arrived at the Polk County office about three minutes after 8. Staff tells me it will take about an hour from here. They process about 170 an hour. #IA03
