Council has little direct role beyond these asks, but I'm going to make them. From a community engagement practitioner, I also must say: rushing this decision to a vote in December would only show that the decision was already made & that whatever hasty "public process" exists would be theater.
Show PostTo state it clearly, I am against the proposed closure plan. The school board's in a difficult spot not of their making, and may have to make difficult decisions including closures, if the state doesn't help, but even then this plan leaves a lot unexplained and uncertain.
Show PostI think we can and should go further. I think we must do some of what was in the proposed resolution that didn't get to an agenda (yet). That includes calling on the state to fully disconnect from federal tax code, reform Measures 5 and 50, and fix the kicker. But this is a good start.
Show PostWe're also saying that this is a place where the City must be involved, not only because this is a part of our city's future & a broader fight against privatization & neoliberalism, but very directly, as the City has made investments in & around schools & have a stake in the outcomes we paid for.
