ive never specifically thought about it but you're right, there really isn't anything preventing 1-3 from just taking place in areas that are slightly run down /abandoned/middle of nowhere rather than post apocalyptic. i think people just assume bc it fits the Vibe of 1 and 2 really well

i thought it was interesting to consider the games "post-human", not necessarily post-apocalyptic. tbh i think part of the problem is they haven't got their ducks in a row; shepherd's family logs imply that they had to escape their home (almost assuredly earth), yet it seems like current day in 4?
