Would it be /better/ if we used the occasionally slightly less ethically and sociologically problematic limited models? Sure. But just like any other actual solution, they will not be used because that’s not what this is about, this is about colonizing the entire planet.

There aren’t any alternatives that work ‘well’ without the underlying frontier work, and they do not solve any of the fundamental problems like only reproducing extant data. They are not a replacement for general-purpose LLMs. And every other non-technical problem still remains.

Jumping in to say that there are alternatives to quadratic attention that work really well. The biggest bottleneck now especially in the frontier is the size of the models and kv cache memory. Tho I can't speculate on what attention mechanism is being used by closed source companies
