Not the case with recent deaths, but I have mourned public figures who were also intimates, and it can feel very weird. Seeing people celebrate their accomplishments and share their stories is affirming, but at times, also, it can feel...like the person I love has been turned into an abstract.

We can feel deeply connected to a public figure and devastated when they die. We can acknowledge the incredible contributions they made to society, art, culture. But we shouldn't confuse that connection with the intimacy of their immediate loved ones.
