This is the only thing I can think about when I think of it.
Show PostI did not like The Giving Tree until hearing my wife’s interpretation, which only seemed obvious to me after inspection
Show PostI think this is mostly correct, except that I think there’s room for “and the tree was happy” at the end to be read at least a little as genuine, since they returned to one another and, in their transformed capacity, fit together once more.
Show PostThat is, the tree gives everything to the boy, and everything that makes the tree a tree is stripped away, but in the end none of those pieces are of any use to the boy, who seems similarly broken, and they give each other some solace.
Show PostIt’s too simple to say it’s about parenthood but it’s not *not* about parenthood. But it’s also about how you can have a shitty friend and still genuinely love and care about them deep down.
