i teach a class where i have to get students to play often old and clunky games and it is so hard to get a lot of them to engage in their own way and push through the frustration and not immediately bouncing off of it and give up, it's frustrating. not saying i haven't done that myself though.

if a game is giving you a hard time, think about what it's asking you to do and how you could do this differently. play with its own set of rules and tactics in mind, try different things, anything to give you a new perspective and not stay in that stale same homogeneous pile

A depressing end result of this is more and more games just playing exactly the same as each other. We are getting closer and closer to there just being one type of gameplay that applies to every genre and anything else gets considered “bad design”

the desire for cohesive and eternal """good design""" is effectively killing any sort of artistic intent. if a game has tank controls it will take you a couple of minutes to adapt then the rest will be smooth sailing, it really isn't more complicated than that
