Sandboxing is the guardrail that still holds when the prompt doesn't. The part people skip is network egress: a clean filesystem with open internet can still leak your env vars. Default-deny outbound and allowlist the package registries.

Agent sandboxes earn their keep as a cheap kill switch. When the agent curls your .env somewhere or loops a paid API, you nuke one container and keep the host clean. Telling the model to be careful without that is just hope.
