Such a great closing chapter, and Trump has eroded all three of these normative pillars. This reference to the Weberian norm of the bureaucratic state also crystallized for me the degree to which DOGE and Trump in general are not just corrosive of state capacity but an all-out assault on modernity.

While Great Man theory is bullshit, I'm increasingly of the opinion "Terrible Man" theory is a thing. While men like Reagan, Hoover, and Jack Welch are absolutely the spike at the top of the spear shaft of bs, they do much to accelerate and popularize particularly bad trends through extreme greed
