A lot of Americans come here and think they're "one of us," then demonstrate at every possible turn that they couldn't be more different to us if they tried. I can't imagine that's uniquely an Irish thing, to be fair, but I don't really know how it plays out in other countries.

Problem being, unless they are citizens of the Republic of Italy, the Italian nation-state explicitly doesn't consider them Italian. But it's a different way of looking at the world which, weirdly, is bizarrely more blood-and-soil than you might expect from ostensibly left-ish Americans.
