I may be being unfair, and I was clearly deeply cynical and resistant to certain material although it is odd - I'd loved Fry and Laurie (although I think that film may have been when I realised it was mainly Laurie I liked) and most of the rest of the cast. I may have carried my own baggage into it.

...about a subject that was ever present and overwhelming, and the treatment felt simultaneously mawkish, self-satisfied and also underserved. Very much there to be the character's big secret revealed rather than explored as a subject or emotionally.
