I remember him confirming this years ago on Talk of the Nation, on NPR. The host (I think it was Neal Conan) was stumbling, trying to find a tactful way to ask about the hair, and Stewart said, "Go on, ask! Be a man!" One of the funniest exchanges I ever heard on that show.

We recently rewatched the entire series on DVDs rented from the public library… and of course we vividly remember watching it on broadcast TV when you had to be there in front of your set at the appointed time or you missed out. I don’t believe there was a weak link in the cast.
