It's not going from a known impossibility to a known possibility, it's going from a "it's not even informally possible to imagine how to do this" to suddenly having a specific knowledge of how to do it with many well validated artifacts and examples. And then moving the goalposts.

This is disingenuous in the sense that it's understating the case: There was no such thing as an LLM in 2014. "simply do not do LLMs" is frankly madness, and should damn anyone who utters it. LLMs are a fucking miracle. value loading is meaningfully solved such that one can use AI successfully as a tool at your job. i will respect an anti position when it doesn't have such rot in it

oh, and: the difference between the appropriate remedies if value loading and alignment are impossible vs merely quite difficult and not as well studied as we would like is vast. like, unspeakably vast: in the latter case imho pause shouldn't even be considered.
