(Another assumption is that the kids aren’t doing this work in class with the teacher. Kids should know what to do… and could tell parents, probs. The “I can’t teach my kid” posts I see astound me. Ask your child!!)

I’m getting the idea that they just don’t remember that there was a process to get to the algorithm that they don’t remember. The number of good educational materials I keep finding from prior decades is illuminating. It may be that teachers didn’t use them of course

I think part of the “controversy” is that parents remember the outcome of their math ed, but not the process. They want their kid to be where they were when they graduated, without going through the steps to get there.
