Show PostJumping in here because it sounds odd. My read of Foucault was about how changes to how power is exercised works. Old sovereign power worked through the right to kill: the king could take your life or leave you alone.
Show PostModern sovereign power, which he called biopower, works by managing life across a whole population: health, birth rates, life expectancy. Its aim is to keep people alive and productive.
Show PostHe then asked how does a power built around keeping people alive still kill them?
Show PostHis answer was state racism: the state divides the population into those who must live and those who can be left to die. He said it first developed with colonisation; Nazism was his extreme case.
