You can see the design logic in the split: preferential voting gives the lower house majority-backed local MPs, while proportional Senate voting gives smaller parties leverage over legislation.

I think the biggest problem in a lot of democracies are the perils of presidentialism which wasn’t even published until the 90’s

Tbh we had early public choice theory and game theory but tbh the practical problems with democracy weren’t really articulated until the postwar era

Like a lot of Hayeks dumb theories of the origins of backsliding are a lot less dumb (but still dumb) when you consider only 2 countries ever backslid democratically at his time

as I've remarked before, the Australian system being a relatively late design by math/politics nerds who could look at problems in other systems is a good thing
