While you’d love to get a solid return for Larkin, if he & his agent are essentially pressuring them to take a mediocre return, then I’d be happier, as a fan, to watch this young team play without him know he is spending the rest of his prime NHL years rotting at home.

This doesn't mean that Russia doesn't try to interfere. Most countries do to some degree (some to even greater degrees than Russia, and with vastly more success). But the percentage that that influence has on the total is small vs. that of even one American billionaire. That's the real problem.
