His point in that passage was exactly that Malthus was correct. The reason that there are not elephants everywhere is that there is a struggle for existence. Absent the Malthusian checks on population, there would be elephants everywhere.

Done my teaching for the term! As I’m not paid to do any teaching (I do it for love of the game as my students say), I find it very sweet that my students asked me to teach more content. I made epidemiology “less unbearable” apparently…I’ll take that as a win, I guess?
Show PostDarwin was pretty weak at maths, though he loved geometric proofs (ala Euclid) and had a solid intuitive grasp of probability and statistics but with none of the formal armature. He thought Malthus was essentially right though. Called his theory “the doctrine of Malthus”applied to plants and animals
