I completely agree. Sexual violence should never be reduced to a plot device or a joke. Male survivors deserve to have their trauma taken seriously, and female characters deserve to be more than tools for male revenge. This is such an important conversation❤️ Can share post please 🙏 I need buy food
Show Postthe other bare minimum is that changing the components is just automatically more novel than re-doing the same familiar trope. what if it's a woman avenging the assault of a male loved one? automatically more layered even if you don't do a good job exploring the conversation abt gender & violence
Show Posteffectively these narratives (in general) are STILL about how his masculinity needs to be reaffirmed thru violence, but the insult to his honor is bodily absorbed by a woman (the natural object of penetration) so that he can still be "penetrator-not-penetrable" while affirming his masculine honor
Show Postright! like the bare minimum effect is that it forces a confrontation with the unexamined parts of the trope
Show PostYou know, this is fairly generative exercise in terms of thinking about media, gendered violence, and rape culture. Because if you said "what if the woman picked up a gun" my immediate reaction would be "hell yeah" but when you ask "what if the man picked up a gun in response to being raped himself"
