See i think of the Smiths and REM as pretty mainstream, but i suppose that's due to the impact of time. You *can* be mainstream and still independent of a record label.

Yea I remember “indie” feeling like a marketing term removed from its, well, independent roots by 2012 much like “alternative” became the catch-all word for mainstream rock by 1994

There was a BIG internet fight in the mid-00s about whether scene music was emo. I stood on the side of the gatekeepers and called people poseurs lol
