Somehow developers are supposedly the most greedy, profit-driven people on the planet, but also...no one can afford the new housing they're building, so it's all empty? Make it make sense!
Show PostI will simply never understand the "no one can afford this new housing" bit. Developers are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars per unit (often up to $1M in California) to build new apartments. Do you think they're doing that so they can sit vacant and make no money?
Show PostNot everyone can afford new market-rate units, but many people can! If you don't build new market-rate housing, those of us who can't afford it then have to compete with those who could for *existing* homes on the market. Guess what that does to the price of the existing housing supply?
