Yes, those things can simultaneously be true when most of the governments in the region are autocracies. The Egyptian government is close to the US because it has no choice. The Egyptian people are indifferent to hostile. This is not a great state of affairs, even if it's better than the 70s.
Show PostFrankly the Durand Line is probably more of an actual British error than more famous ones like Sykes-Picot (which both was never implemented in that form and mostly isn't the cause of sectarian divisions in MENA) or Indian Partition (which was decided primarily by leaders of princely states).
