I appreciate you catching that, to be clear! But I sincerely doubt that these are the same "alkaline" as what we mean by "alkaline batteries" and don't see a reason not to classify them as carbon-zinc.

You should be able to get, at minimum, 2 watt-hours per cell out of an NiMH AA battery. And they're extremely power dense, in fact that's their primary advantage. They trade a bit of energy density for gobs of power density. But unless your device understands you're using them, they look dead.

But to be clear, 1.2V is what they should be. They might poke up a bit higher fresh off the charger, but when discharged they essentially just sit at 1.2V right before they crash. Personally I suspect you have a bad charger as an audio recorder like that is a perfect fit for the tech
