There was a big potential audience for this by making it darker, somewhere between teenagers and adults as the target audience, a bit like Wednesday, but so far it looks hardly any different from the film, except slightly longer. The CGI from 2001 gets an upgrade but who cares.

There's visibly a much better Hobbit two-hour film to be found within its seven hour 50 minute runtime, but at least at the level of 'we can get three bites at the box office' I understand the commercial logic.
