To the degree there is a play here, it is maintaining the blockade and then negotiating for the free flow of oil in exchange for other concessions (almost certainly including a clear road to nuclear breakout). Trump can't do that, of course, because it would be an admission of defeat.
Show PostThe Iranian regime needs out of this conflict too, after all. A new democratic administration in 2028 might provide them the face-saving exit necessary. But you are going to be conceding some de facto Iranian hegemony, because that's what happens when you fight and lose.
