If you cannot hear, you are not safe. This is why drivers are banned from rolling their windows up and/or listening to music.

This has actually been studied, albeit not as much as I'd like, and "cyclist with earphones in" actually has better awareness of traffic around them than "motorist with stereo on", provided cyclists keep the volume reasonable.

Cars are sound-proof boxes! They obstruct lines of sight for the driver. They now come with built-in screens that can distract drivers for up to half a minute They just keep ignoring that one group is responsible for 99.9% of the traffic violence

Fun fact, studies have found that a cyclist or pedestrian with full ear headphones listening to music can still hear better than the average car with the radio off, but we don’t demand all cars drive with the window down for some reason.
