they built “too much“ housing pre gfc and ”too much” fiber optic cable pre dotcom bust. Both crashed the stock market for a bit but the things themselves wound up being very useful eventually. If you are right and a few of these 100-1000b structures go to zero it could still be kinda fine tbh.

My dad worked in theatre (dahling) from the late 70s, when he started out a lot of the backstage crew were just trades guys ie one of them worked on the rigs and picked up theatre shifts to fill the onshore gaps. Then around the late 80s I guess, there's more in the way of technical degrees 1/2

This is where it really starts to shift I think. My impression may be flawed and there may be a Scottish slant to it where there's a tradition of strong working class involvement in many things that are seen as more middle class in the South eg golf, outdoor pursuits.
