Well, fuck. Vale Patrick Stewart (1940-2026). I’ve been rewatching all of Star Trek: The Next Generation, savouring Picard’s vast moral presence and spirit of curiosity. And I encounter Picard only through this intelligent, charismatic actor. Such gifts he had, such gifts he gave. I’m grateful.

It is both shocking and unsurprising that the Australian Jewish News has refused to publish this letter, which is deliberately framed in a very conservative and gentle way about something as horrific as what Israel is doing so as to open the door to people to change their minds. /1

The AJN has played an outsized role in shifting the Aus Jewish diaspora’s politics to the extreme right on Israel, both by refusing the publish dissenting voices as they are doing here, and also by disciplining those who dissent by shaming (or threatening to shame) them in their own community. /2
