jean-luc picard was one of the best, least-toxic, examples of masculinity available to me as a kid. He was someone who showed that refined tastes didn't have to pair with terrible politics: you can be a space communist who leads from the front and loves classical music and theater.

OF COURSE it has to end with the Inner Light song. Ugh, that episode is so perfect. I rewatched it a couple of years ago and was struck by the realization that Picard technically spent more time as Kamin than as Picard. He WAS Kamin, maybe even more so than he was Picard.
