there was an interesting thing happening at the time where evangelical culture did in fact realize that it was simpatico with secular trends (stomp clap, preachers n sneakers) but the relationship was parasitic, not a hijacking like OP suggests

Gotta admit I've gotten really cynical about these kinds of stories in particular, where a reporter asks a GOP politician "are you considering (thing you cannot legally do)", and gets a clickbait headline out of it. And maybe undermine democracy a bit along the way.

The press is indifferent to democracy and the Republican Party is actively hostile to it. I really believe the only path here is to cultivate a widespread civic religion that reacts with visceral disgust at any person or institution that seeks or facilitates undermining democracy.

I've seen the post castigating people for not knowing of a particular celebrity and my dude I have to tell you that no matter who you are there are literally thousands of "celebrities" you have never heard of in the US alone, if you want to play that game I will absolutely BURY you in your ignorance
