Goodnight all I’ve had extremely positive feedback on my short story so I am chuffed and will happily turn it into a novel I’ve entered it into a short story competition for Feb 2027
Show PostFunnily enough when we moved into a rental for house repairs it was to the only spot in the suburb that had a history of being hit by a tornado (1960s)- the elderly neighbour behind us had grown up in the same house and had all these photos of the destroyed houses, including his and ours 😳
Show PostThe ‘tornado’ wind was freaky. It seemed to change direction every second, making it really hard to choose a safe spot in the house to shelter. We had other people’s kids in the house as well as our own. The idea of more of these things is genuinely terrifying.
Show PostIn contrast, the last serious storm in 2014 blasted every house (in the entire suburb, pretty much) from the south side with massive hail and insane wind. We were just one house of thousands to need the roof and windows replaced instead of being one of ~a dozen with damage so severe we had to move.
Show PostThere were two tall Grevillea robusta on a verge up the road from us, maybe 8m apart. One was snapped in half, the other basically untouched. That was probably the most striking example, but there was a similar pattern in a park down the road; our mango tree lost about half the dome of its canopy.
