by the time it became popular in a more mainstream sense in the early 2010's, evangelicals came back and used this aesthetic towards their own ends. that's the peak Mumford and Son era, and the Lumineers etc and i think where the sentiment expressed in the OP comes from. anyway

in the 2000's the aesthetic became more apolitical, (generally) not particularly religious, and liberal leaning. perhaps a conscious response to the ways evangelicals had taken over culture in other ways. people were playing with those tropes.

it's impossible to have a more complicated conversation on this about social media, but this type of music does take influence from US evangelical culture without a doubt - even going back to stuff like Danielson Famile or Sufjan Stevens which was more explicitly christian.

i’m deleting that post because a lot of people are reading it in ways that i did not intend … because everyone brings their own background and perspective to a post. mine was that of a former music journalist who finds the way religion influences culture and vice versa to be interesting

the thing to know about millennials (not to speak for all of the class bc it's not some of y'all's truth) but a lot of the bravado was papering over the fact that much of the club was broke
