i would argue that people were writing this music as a faked smile, not because it was reflective of a real cultural attitude. it's not like things were "good" or "happy" post-9/11 or during the 2008 recession so a lot of this music scans to me as like "AAAAAAAAAAA PRETEND WE ARE OKAY AAAAAAAA"
