If you can tolerate the nitrile gloves, you put the ointment on & gloves over it. You can wash the gloves, if need be. I do this because I have cats & can’t expose them to steroids. The ointment stays in place. I can wash it off the gloves without washing it off my hands.

For this, may I recommend nitrile gloves? They’re not expensive. They’ll protect the splint and/or your hands. I don’t know if you can tolerate them, but they’ll keep both your hands and the splint clean.
