Rich Evans of Red Letter Media's plan for running a good Star Trek show was mainly to hire literary sci-fi writers and give them a shoestring budget. I think that's exactly right. You're giving a wheelbarrow of money to Sarah Pinsker to write a script that is allowed no more than 3 sets.

TNG was a show that people very commonly watched with their own parents, and I think that makes the feeling of loss more acute.

Yes, absolutely. Also the big budget means you get ten episodes per season because they spend so much time doing the special effects. But short seasons means there's no time to get to know and love the characters. SNW will end with fewer episodes in 6 years than TOS aired in 16 months
