This is a great point. I would argue that the generation after the so-called Golden Age contained much higher highs than the Golden Age generation and a much higher average quality level. In fact, I would argue every era after the Golden Age has been collectively better than it.

Very much like the New Yorker short story! If every "literary" short story in the US reads vaguely the same, it's because they were all aimed at a specific place with a specific house style, the one lit fic market that even your mother's heard of, and which pays in more than contributor's copies.
