I thought about a course packet. Once copyright fees were calculated, the cost would be about $700. So, ended up using canvas plus a couple of books. Hence the tablets.
Show PostI like that line! I might borrow it, too.
Show PostI don't do it right now, because I'm teaching programming, but I have, in the past, asked that laptops be put away during a lecture class. For the justification on the syllabus, I stole a line from another professor: "I want to see where your eyes are." I don't remember any issues.
Show PostSo it's not a full device ban policy, but this has allowed them to come to the conclusion largely on their own that they will do better if they put the devices away. (And I told them I'd take progress between exams into consideration for their final grade so they're incentivized to improve habits)
Show PostI'm only trying it this semester and partially but my policy in an entry World History I class is "open note exams, not open device." There was no push back and after the first exam, students have been using devices in class less frequently on their own to improve their note-taking by hand.
