The $100 Steam fee does nothing here because the spammers are often idiot dilettantes or dedicated shovelware operations and both are burning way more than that on tokens. So eventually you land on "you need to know somebody to get a game on Steam" to re-create some kind of honest signal.

What I'm hearing for example is that the volume of slop on Steam Next Fest didn't just compete for attention with legitimate games, it depressed user engagement to the point that nobody was getting attention.

People may joke but this might be where this all ends up: on the industry recreating old forms of gatekeeping so that social proof and webs of trust can be used to stem the tide of low-effort slop, effectively undoing what digital distribution did in the late 2000s and early 2010s.

I second this: long read, but excellent.

"I am here to be rude, because this is a rude technology, and it deserves a rude response" Stealing work, reproducing it using a shockingly polluting system, with infrastructure housed in a fast-tracked community-angering building is *rude* anthonymoser.github.io/writing/ai/h... @anthonymoser.com
