white american here, grew up in a mainline-protestant liberal family. we did go to services on all saint's day, and once we were older, would on that day pay our respects to relatives of ours whose ashes were at that church. but in the usa death is kept far away from children.

I find it's mostly english people my age and older who say they didn't do Halloween as a kid because we did in Scotland. It was no way near as big a thing as it is now but I have a strong memory of a primary school teacher in tears carving a turnip.
