I have put my finger on something valuable to games (and fiction), but I'm flailing around trying to find a way to articulate it. There used to be a rule of thumb in game design that it's unsatisfying to set up and then resolve your own tension, but that doesn't hold up well as presented.

There are absolutely risks that come with giving points for things. Iit's been years since we've had to offer any incentives for it because it's just the norm now , but paying out was really an important step to move from "It's nice and welcome" to "It's expected enough that NOT doing it is odd"
