A direct impact of LLMs in science. Journals are being overwhelmed by papers that use LLMs but do not really engage at all with existing literature or contextualize their results.

This seems like what happened with some individual fiction magazines a couple of years ago. Someone posts "do this thing with the text generator" somewhere; others pick it up; and spam whatever outlet is mentioned. As you wrote, it doesn't take too many people doing that to overwhelm the system.

We need better systems and solutions - fast - else our last resort will be to close science down, and revert to a world in which only 'credentialed' researchers in institutions can participate in the scientific process. And that would be a tragedy.

I'm in academic publishing (edtech field) and it's getting very bad. It is starting to affect our production schedule. We actually hired someone to help weed out AI-written papers and probably will move that position from part-time to full-time.
