The single biggest mistaken consensus in Westminster on tax in my view is the belief that a 'one and done' tax rise at the start of a parliament is something voters won't forget, but raising their taxes every year of the parliament is in fact good and clever politics.

The political consensus defaulting to the minimum wage as a substitute for a serious engagement with welfare, and fiscal drag as a substitute for serious engagement with tax rates is bad and it's probably a policy area that I have changed my mind on in the last few years.
