Also, it’s like e.g. Joanna Lumley saying we should not think ill of our ancestors. But she didn’t mean “our ancestors” - mine are mostly menial workers in Scotland and neighbouring countries. She meant *her* ancestors, who were IIRC imperial administrators in India.
