So yeah, the music wasn't always very good and it feels awkward sometimes to listen to a track that was just an intimate letter set to a mandolin. Just remember that this was a reaction to stoicism. It was honesty as rebellion. It was effusive and true and silly and embarrassing and brave.

Do you know who's never been comfortable with radical earnestness? Gen Z. They grew up with cameras in their faces and they all have a classmate who went viral doing something dumb on someone's reels. Gen Z is awesome at ironic detachment and blending in. I love that they're having fun with cringe!

Obviously much of Millennial adolescence was cringe (as most adolescence is) but some musical context: Stomp-Clap-Hey music was a reaction to rock like The Strokes hiding under a cool image. Cringe is radical earnestness which felt gutsier and more punk rock than the artifice that preceded it.
