That's more or less how it is, hence why skins are referred to as "outfits" so technically nobody is playing as the "real" character.

If Navarette is happy with her paycheck, who am I to be offended. Fortnite just reads like copyrighted avatars in Ready Player One to me. This isn't a sequel that retcons themes in the original. It's a digital Halloween costume.
