ok but to be REALLY fair the hippies had an entire identifiable culture that went with their music, whereas twee hipsters were just twentysomethings who went out

It's a mishmash of styles from as early as the late 1990s through to 2014, which is why it doesn't look right to those of us who lived it. It's the equivalent of seeing a 1952 poodle skirt with a 1966 mod turtleneck.

Even as an eldest Millennial, I was a teen before leaded gas was banned. I have to wonder how much of that I got. As a kid I knew that only the lead paint chips tasted sweet. The newer paint chips were just bland.
