Are you the smart guy if you learn how that metric works and insist on it as the only way to communicate economic happenings? Or are you the smart guy if you blow past that metric and find truths more pertinent to your actual audience, without assuming they have that specialized knowledge?

Here's a simple example. The unemployment metric used in US news media is one that is highly contained. It does things like reject people who have given up on finding work! Why would it do that? Why would it be represented as the objective unemployment rate if it rejects the chronically unemployed?
