Oh, I’ve never heard of that, interesting. I think the fact my family lived in a country lane played a part, it wasn’t the sort of place kids could wander around at night.

We made lanterns from mangles, as in mangle wurzels - gnarly, beet-like, animal fodder. I should say tried to make lanterns, as they were a horror to try to carve But that was for 5 November and a handful of little fireworks in the back garden. Trick or treat (a horrible thing, imo) is much newer

I've always been in very rural locations too - I don't think I've ever had a trick or treater arrive at the door, in GB or FR.
