Yeah, its only when he's actually face to face with him (and I think importantly, perceiving him as a trembling and vulnerable person) does he realise that this man could potentially have been another son to him.

Yeah, this is fair, though the aftermath of the deloping (delopement?) feels more as a sort of spiritual and moral ruination of Barry moreso than the ruination of his life prospects. He escapes so far only to return to point A because of the cruelty of the world he joined so insistently.
